Jorge Rodríguez's National Assembly passes first reading of Supreme Court law reform giving civil society a majority on the nominations committee

The National Assembly passed on first reading a reform of the Organic Law of the Supreme Court (TSJ), Efecto Cocuyo reported. The Judicial Nominations Committee grows from 21 to 23 members: 11 lawmakers and 12 civil-society representatives, who now hold the majority. Thirty-two justices will be chosen, and the 561 nominations filed in June are void.

Pedro Infante presented the proposal as part of the August 12 agreement at the dialogue table. Jorge Rodríguez said the decision belongs to the Assembly "because the Constitution says so," according to Efecto Cocuyo. On the opposition side, David Placeres said chavismo is losing control of the court and that the reform was imposed by the United States.
