Delcy Rodríguez's government notifies the UN of Venezuela's exit from the International Criminal Court
Foreign Minister Félix Plasencia on Friday announced the "firm and irrevocable" decision to leave the ICC by denouncing the Rome Statute, and notified UN Secretary-General António Guterres, El Nacional reported. According to AP, Plasencia accused the Court of a geographic bias against African and Latin American countries.
AP noted that the withdrawal takes effect one year after notification and that the investigation into alleged crimes against humanity remains active. On NTN24, an analyst linked the decision to the US government's criticism of the Court.
