Discourse Radar methodology

What it is and where the data come from

• Public videos from Venezuelan channels, programs and spokespeople, with their automatic transcripts. The Radar uses the last 12 months; the full library is larger.
• Sources are grouped by type: state media and official spokespeople, political parties, non-state media, journalists and commentators.
• Figures per 10,000 transcribed words, so sources and months of different sizes can be compared. 5 per 10,000 is roughly once every 15 minutes of airtime.
• Results come from automatic transcripts, which may contain errors. They describe term frequency in the included sources, not intent, tone, truthfulness, audience or public opinion. A mention is not attributed to a person: it may come from a host, a guest or a clip.

The Radar by period

• 3–6-word phrases discovered in the transcripts and found in 3+ sources; show signatures and known caption errors are excluded.
• "Most characteristic": at least 8 times in the period and a rate per 10,000 words over 1.5 times the rest of the material (G² test ≥ 10.83).
• "New": at least 8 times and never before, with at least 3 earlier months covered.
• "No longer found": at least 8 times in the previous period of the same length and none now, with at least 100,000 words analyzed. It does not show silence or a decision.

Term by term

• Change = (current mentions ÷ current words) ÷ (baseline mentions ÷ baseline words) − 1, from unrounded counts with the same formula for rises, falls and both groups.
• We publish a percentage only with at least 8 mentions in each period and 100,000 words per group and period. A change smaller than 30% is shown as "No material change".
• Each group uses only sources with videos in both periods, so a show that stopped publishing cannot fake a fall.
• The bar uses a logarithmic scale, the same for every cell: doubling and halving have the same length.
• "No mentions recorded" does not mean the topic did not exist; "Not enough data" means there are not enough comparable words or mentions; a missing value is never shown as zero.

Word context

• Automated comparison: a fixed list of confrontational terms near the topic versus cooperative terms. It flags cases to review; it is not sentiment analysis, does not measure opinion or intent, and does not prove a contradiction.
• Excerpts are from the channel/program and may include a host, guest, clip, reporter or voice-over; the linked video lets you verify the speaker.
• A lower observed frequency does not establish intentional silence.

How many times did they say it?

• Mentions = times the word or phrase appears in the transcripts. Per 10,000 = mentions ÷ words × 10,000.
• Balanced view: each video counts up to 8,000 words and each channel up to 250,000 a month, so no channel weighs more just by talking more. Raw figures count every word of every video.
• Hollow dots are months with under 10 videos from that source: read them with care.
• Suggested words are the most characteristic phrases of the period chosen in "The Radar by period". What you add is counted as an exact phrase (up to 6 words), ignoring accents, case and punctuation, in an index of every word and phrase that appears at least 8 to 20 times in these 12 months (20 for single words).

Where it was said

• Tapping a phrase or a chart point lists the videos in the chosen period and channels where it appears: channel or show, title, publication date, times it appears, rate per 10,000 words in that video, link and a verbatim excerpt of up to 20 words.
• The per-channel summary gives mentions, videos and mentions per 10,000 words of everything that channel published in the period.
• Links with a timestamp only appear when the stored transcript keeps caption timings (today, about one video in eight); the time is the start of the caption line that contains the phrase.

Excerpts from their channels

• Each card gathers excerpts found in videos from the listed channel, with date and link. "More on…" opens earlier excerpts on the same topic.
• Excerpts come from automatic transcripts of the listed channel; on shows with guests, someone else may be speaking: open the video to verify. Quotes are in the original Spanish.
