Igbert Marín Chaparro faces a new prosecution despite completing his sentence

Lieutenant Colonel Igbert Marín Chaparro, who completed a seven-and-a-half-year sentence on September 9, 2025, now faces the “La Viñeta” case, which accuses him of plotting an attack on the National Electoral Council's headquarters from his cell, according to Runrun.es and VPItv.

Relatives and human rights groups say the new case is meant to keep him from being released, VPItv reported. Opposition leader María Corina Machado called the case a brutal abuse and said Marín Chaparro already served a sentence she considers unjust.
