María Corina Machado denounces new prosecution of Lt. Col. Igbert Marín Chaparro

Lt. Col. Igbert Marín Chaparro remains detained despite completing his first sentence in September 2025, and now faces the "La Viñeta" case over an alleged plot against officials and the electoral council, VPItv reported. The UN had previously documented complaints of mistreatment and said he developed asthma while imprisoned.

María Corina Machado called the new case a "brutal abuse" and, AlbertoNews reported, said prosecutors are seeking a 30-year sentence. The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners had demanded answers from the Ombudsman's Office about political detainees, VPItv reported.
